Amazing Vacations In Loch Ness, Highlands

Scotland is a world class place to take a vacation. It is incredibly popular with hill-walkers, hikers, ramblers, mountain climbers and other visitors who enjoy this type of vacation. Most tourists enjoy the contrasting and graceful countryside which has a massive amount of places to visit including some well know,  and striking, areas of outstanding beauty. One of these sites which is, probably the most well known is Loch Ness and the famous monster. In the article below I take a look at this most fascinating Loch Ness as a vacation destination.

Intensely deep and atmospheric, Loch Ness is a gigantic area of water set in the awesome Highlands of Scotland not a large distance away from Inverness (see below for more info). Surrounded by the most charming countryside, which features mystical areas of woodland, huge mountains blanketed in heather, the loch is most famous for being home to the Loch Ness Monster affectionately named Nessie.

The monster of Loch Ness first appears in history in the story of St Columba. It is said that the saint enticed a sea monster back into the waters after the beast had been attacking one of the monks.

In the third decade of the twentieth century a road was created running alongside the loch. After only a few years in 1934 stories concerning sightings of a monster of huge proportions started to feature in the media.

Inverness, commonly referred to as being the capital city of the Highlands of Scotland, was eventually granted city status in 2001 and at this time is the the only city to be found in the region. Uniquely (in the UK) Inverness has no legal boundaries which causes problems with population statistics. The problems are made worse because the city’s population is increasing dramatically, Inverness has the highest growth rate of any city in Great Britain. One certainty we know of is that the population of Inverness is fairly happy, in 2008 the city came 5th in a survey taken, by the Telegraph, of 189 UK cities for quality of life. Therefore, I think we can safely say that Inverness is a pretty alright city in which to live and this is most probably one of the facts which make the city incredibly popular with tourists. It is lucky then that there is a great deal of Inverness guesthouses and hotels with the majority of it being able to be booked online.

One of the most important things to know is that the nearest airport to Inverness is, approximately, 7 miles east of the city at Dalcross. You can hail a cab or catch a bus to the small but busy airport which is not too expensive. If you need maps of the area then you will discover that they are free at the tourist office, on Castle Wynd in the town center. While you are in the city you should make a point to visit the ‘stone of tubs’ and Mercat Cross, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery and Inverness Castle especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, an interactive experience which is immensely enjoyable.

If you are interested in visiting Scotland based in Loch Ness and Inverness then you will find Inverness bed and breakfast online by searching for “Inverness hotel accommodation” or “Inverness bed and breakfast” into your favorite search engine (the inverted commas can help enormously).
